Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP) in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago, established two solar powered water disinfection units in Western Kenya. It is all solar, no ground water depletion. Produces ozone for disinfection on site using new microplasma technology. it is managed by local water operators who sell water at market rate to individuals and water vendors. It is a platform for other income generating activities as well. SWAP tests the water on regular basis in our water lab to ensure it is fit for human consumption.
Because of this innovation SWAP won two prestigious awards.
- The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award. SWAP received this prestigious global water award in Dubai during award ceremonies and gala dinners from 8th to 12th January 2023 https://lnkd.in/dp3ky3R3
- The Energy Globe Award Kenya 2022 - Handed to SWAP during a ceremony attended by the Austrian Ambassador in Kenya and Senior Ministry of Health Officials.
Thank you @Alie Eleveld for sharing your project on Knowledge Point. Looking forward for the outcomes of this interesting project. It would also be good to hear from others who have been implementing solar power water disinfection projects in other regions/countries.
