Henk Holtslag 10 Senior advisor SMART Centre Group
My experience with HWTS started in 1990 with the ceramic pot filter in Nicaragua, promoted by Ron Rivera of Potters for Peace, by improving the filter press and starting up local production in Ghana, El Salvador and Kenya. PfP did an impresive job and started production in many countries. Lateron assisted with smaller filters like the Tulip Siphon and Table top filters as promoted by Basic Water Needs. One lesson learned in these years is; "simple is not easy". Filters maybe simple but it is not easy to reach the scale needed to serve the many millions in need. Still HWTS and especially filters seem a very if not most cost-effective approach to reach the goal of "safe water for all". At the 2022 Stockholm water week and bold HWTS was launched called; "2 with 8". 2 Billion people can have safe drinking water with an investment of "just" 8 $Billion.
